Are trans people something to be taught in school?

08/09/2024

Trans people have been a big topic in news and general media as of the past few years, more specifically where they belong in our society. Some concluding that trans people belong segregated from our population and others wanting them exiled and or even killed, most aren't too bothered by their existence and only want the best for them (my opinion included). What I'll be questioning in this piece is whether the existence of trans people should be taught in school and which bits should be shared.

In 2020 2,630 hate crimes were reported to the police, but the number of incidents is closer to 100,000. This is a concerningly high number especially when only 0.20% of the population even identifies as trans. Now I have a theory around why there are so many hate crimes on this particular community and sadly a lot of bulling to this very community.

I think that the reason Trans people are so alienated in our society is because we as people aren't aware of them or used to them when we are in our developing ages, a crude example would be if we as children went most of our child lives knowing all the vegetables we know: carrots, broccoli and Lettice however as we got in to our teen years, even young adult hood, we began seeing a blue vegetable that we'd never seen or heard about before. Now I don't think some people would want to eat or be around this mysterious veg that were not used to, as we learn more about it some may be okay with it, even try it however some peoples would be firmly agents it or even hate it because it's different from what they know.

In short children don't know what trans people are really like so, some, as they get older, they distinctly may want to avoid. If these points were implemented in our education system it doesn't need to be a crazy deep dive or 'convincing' children they should be trans (which I don't think is a thing now btw).

It would be similar to the 2018 children's book 'all about families' the book illustrates all different types of families, some with two mums, some with middle eastern kids and parents, some with only one parents, or even different collard parents. For me personally this book was vital to my understanding of people and my peers, it introduced me to the simple idea of some people you share the world with are going to be different .It's as easy as showing that some individuals are different and to respect everyone equally.

On the contrary many think that this topic should not be for children or that it will inevitably lead to more children to want to become trans even if there really not, which I could see why that could be a problem parents may think about, so that's why I think it should be a clear introduction, they simply exist and there not weird or something to made fun of because they are different from you.

Some don't think any of these matters and that kids should deal with whatever comes there way, but I do think in this society that we don't have a lot of empathy for children who do struggle with this, because may I remind you that being transgender is a struggle that haunts you every day. 82% of transgender children and adults have considered suicide, 40% have attempted it, those numbers are worrying considering that these people are usually young people and children. Children, these kids deserve help at most and respect at least. And I think its despicable that people want these people to suffer more.

May the horrific case of Brianna Ghey heigh on your mind when you tell your kids false stereotypes about trans people, demonizing them or alienating them to your impressionable kids, think about what that can do.

Think about who is indoctrinating who.

writers note

With this piece i hope to open the mind of those who may not understand or respect what the trans experience is and how education is important to our society.I hope to have been respectful to any community i spoke about.
